Set up your "photo studio" |
| Do it in the daytime so you have plenty of natural light
Place a solid-colored blanket or sheet on the floor
If your floor is hard, hide a towel or blanket underneath your solid-colored
blanket so that your baby is comfortable.
Look through your camera and be sure all you can see is the blanket -
not the stuff behind it or to the side. |
| 2 |
Set up your camera |
| |
Get the camera all ready to go before the
baby is!
Turn the date stamp OFF- date stamps can ruin your photos.
Set the camera to the highest possible resolution and compression- make
sure your cute pictures can be saved forever in the best-possible quality.
Make sure the battery is fully charged.
Start with a fresh memory card so you can take plenty of pictures |

Set up your baby |
| |
Models are high maintenance - have your photo shoot when
your baby is happy!
Plain clothes make the best outfits for photo shoots- stripes, patterns,
and designs can be distracting.
Double check your baby's face for any stray bits of food, flaky skin,
or boogies.
If your baby gets fussy during the shoot, take a break and try again
in a few hours.
| 4 |
Take the pictures! |
| |
Get above your baby and point the camera downwards
Make sure the only things you can see in the shot are the baby and the
blanket backdrop - avoid including clutter in the photo
Try moving around for different angles of your baby.
Check your camera's display as you are taking pictures - make sure the
background is not distracting and your pictures are in focus.
Take lots and lots of pictures - that way you can save the ones with
the cutest expressions and poses.
Don't worry if you take an out of focus picture - just step back, breathe
deeply, and take another picture. If it's still out of focus, you might
need more light - move to a brighter location.
Don't give up! If it's not working out the first time you try, wait a
while, change your setup, and try again soon!
You can do it!!! |
| Do |
Don't |
| Place your baby on a plain background |
Where's the baby? Avoid patterned fabrics that distract
from your little one's sweet face |
| |
| Do make sure your blanket is big enough to be in the
background of the whole photo |
Don't let part of your baby overlap the edge of your
backdrop |
| |
| Turn the "date stamp" off on your camera |
Don't let your adorable picture be ruined by a bunch
of red numbers |
| |
| Get your picture in focus |
If the focus isn't good, take another shot instead |
| |
| Do get close and avoid distracting objects in the background |
A changing table makes a great photo studio - just clear
out the wipes and lotion first |
<- -> These pictures were both
taken with the baby in the same spot, but the person holding the camera
changed position <- -> |
| Do get above your baby and angle the camera down |
Don't shoot from the side when the background has so
much going on. |
| |
| If you are using the flash, make sure the picture is
exposed correctly |
If you get too close or your flash is too strong, the
image can be washed out |
| |
| For feet pictures, isolate them on the background |
The feet get lost here with the busy background |
| |
If you have gotten in close, you might need to put
your camera into Macro Mode or Close Up mode.
Not all cameras have this setting. If yours does, it
usually has a button with a flower on it.
Just remember to go back to regular mode when you are done with the close
ups! |
If you are closer than 3 feet, without Macro mode, you
might get a blurry photo. |
| |
| When including an older sibling, keep their faces very
close to each other |
Too much space between the children's heads takes the
focus off of their faces, and off of their relationship |
| |
